Port & Polish (P&P)

What is Port & Polish?

This is what Wikipedia said about P&P: Cylinder head porting refers to the process of modifying the intake and exhaust ports of an internal combustion engine to improve the quality and quantity of the air flow. Cylinder heads, as manufactured, are usually suboptimal due to design and manufacturing constraints. Porting the heads provides the finely detailed attention required to bring the engine to the highest level of efficiency. More than any other single factor, the porting process is responsible for the high power output of modern engines.

This process can be applied to a standard racing engine to optimize its power output as well as to a production engine to turn it into a racing engine, to enhance its power output for daily use or to alter its power output characteristics to suit a particular application.

Daily human experience with air gives the impression that air is light and nearly non-existent as we move slowly through it. However, an engine running at high speed experiences a totally different substance. In that context, air can be thought of as thick, sticky, elastic, gooey and heavy (see viscosity). Pumping it is a major problem for engines running at speed so head porting helps to alleviate this.

Advantages

  • Reduce air resistance
  • Increase the quality and quantity of the air flow
  • Increase speed and pickup (up to 7hp on the wheel after P&P intake manifold)
  • It is a very good for street and drag racing setup
Disadvantages
  • Power lost when climbing-up hill 
  • High fuel consumption
  • Sometime can cause an abnormal engine temp especially when climbing-up hill
  • Not practical for long distance
  • Engine respond very sluggish for daily driven especially during 1000-3000rpm

  • Maximum 2mm port & polish is adivisable
  • Before you send you engine head for P&P, try asking the mechanic if he knows about “air flow bench”. It he did not knows anything about that, just forgot them, find another workshop. As Wikipedia says, Air Flow Bench is a device used for testing the internal aerodynamic qualities of an engine component and is related to the more familiar wind tunnel. Or in my bad language, special tool to ensure all the hole (valve hole) that was P&P are in the same size. Different hole size or porting size to the combustion area can cause imbalance compression ratio and cause engine hard to tune-up. Most of the mechanic just use their 6th sense to replace this useful device.
  • If you car don't have any problem with power, daily driven and plan to used the engine up to 7-10years, recommended not to do this P&P. If for drag and street racing.. YES!!

Upgrade Perodua Kancil to EFI fuel system (with/without Turbo)

Perodua kancil is a well know fuel saving compact car operated with its carburator fuel system. Nowdays, every new car comes out with Electronic Fuel System (EFI) that will quarantee you a lower fuel consumpation especially on compact car. EFI system is an electronic-controled fuel injector by the ECU (Engine Control Unit) to inject the fuel trough the nozzle under high pressure to the combussion area. By converting to EFI system, you can feel the different especially the on the fuel consumpation, engine smoothness and of cause a powerful engine becasue of the L2/L2s 12-valve head compared to 6-valve on Perodua Kancil.  While using the carburator fuel system on your Perodua Kancil, you satisfied enough with its fuel consumpation. Just imagine if the carburator system converted to the EFI system.. Fuel consumpation should be MARVELLOUS!!!

If you want to convert to EFI system without changing the original engine block (for the purpose of maintaining the engine number), you can take this EFI kit from Daihatsu Mira 660cc L2/L2s. This is the list of item you needed to make this project accomplish, for non-turbo (N/A).

1. 12valve L2/L2s engine head (recommended L2/L2s turbo 12v head for future upgrade to turbo)
2. L2/L2s engine wiring set (recommended L2/L2s turbo wiring set for future upgrade to turbo)
3.  L2/L2s Ecu (recommended L2/L2s turbo ECU for future upgrade to turbo)
4.  L2/L2s Intake Manifold
5.  L2/L2s Exhaust Manifold (N/A manifold) 6.  L2/L2s Double Layer Radiator
7.  Double Layer Gasket/Metal Gasket.
8.  L2/L2s Fuel tank

*note: L2/L2s is a Daihatsu Mira model in Japan.

If you want to convert the non-turbo (N/A) EFI system to turbo, list of item listed above is needed but need to change the N/A exhaust manifold to turbo exhaust manifold. But make sure you use L2/L2s turbo 12-valve head and L2/L2s turbo wiring set including the ECU. For information, L2/L2s N/A engine wiring cannot use for turbo engine as well as the N/A ECU. Problem in tune up the engine, unless using the engine management system such as E-manage.

When playing with turbo, the stock Perodua Kancil piston also must be change to L2/L2s turbo piston. For the 660cc model, no need to rebore the piston cylinder but still have to use the l2/l2s turbo piston because Perodua Kancil piston is a high compression piston while l2/l2s turbo piston is low compression. High compression piston not suitabel for turbo engine especially in high boost.

But for 850cc model, you need to rebore the piston cylinder because the size of 850cc piston is smaller than 660cc model (660cc piston = 68mm, 850cc piston 66.8mm).

There are privileges in which the 850cc will be 882cc turbo when coupled with a larger piston (piston l2/l2s) and higher block that was only availalbe on 850cc block (660cc block lower than 850cc). 850cc gearbox can be reuse and this will give your car extra power compared to L2/l2s 660cc turbo.

But if you have a budget around RM5000, it is advisable to buy 660cc Daihatsu half-cut set from auto half-cut store for a better functions of other electrical equipment such as air-conditioner and power stering. Some of the combined-wiring (kancil wiring+L2/L2s EFI wiring) may cause air-conditioner fail to function properly. But there is a solution for this, by using FICD (Fast Idle Control Device).

Change Pitch Circle Diameter (PCD)

Many of car the enthutism like to change the wheels of their vehicle up to 2-3 times a year. All kinds of rims in the market today that offers a full range of designs with an appropriate price. Each rim has a different bolt hole, or commonly known as the PCD (pitch circle diameter), mostly in the market have four and five-bolt hole. Usually should be no problem for users of vehicles using the five-hole rim. The problem usually arise with vehicles using four-hole nut because there are three common sizes of PCD in the market that is 100mm, 110mm and 114.3mm.

Normally people will choose the rim based on the shape, diameter, colour and price of the rim. Can or not be fitted with the vehicle it is a second thing. If it can be fitted, then you can enjoy your ride with a new rim on the spot. Otherwise, should be very disappointed!

Actually you can still use different rim PCD into your vehicle. Of cause this will take an extra cost. An easy way with budget around RM200.00, you can use the "PCD converter", which it will convert the PCD, for example from the PCD 100 PCD 110 PCD without changing the original PCD. Meaning that, if you want to convert back to PCD 110 in the future, just remove the PCD converter. This is one example of PCD converter available in the market.

Usually, users of Perodua Kancil (Daihatsu Mira L2, L2S, L5 in Japan) will convert from PCD 110 to 100, to make them easier to find the most appropriate rim for their ride because most of the rims available in the market in size of PCD 100. But the disadvantages of using this converter PCD, it will cause the rims and tires will come off a little from the fender and will eventually lead to bearing damage in long term.
In addition, if you wish to continue using the desired PCD instead of the original one, take out the hub and knuckle, bring it to engineering workshop (Usually metal work or heavy machinery workshop), and tell them what PCD are you desired. In this way, the rim will not be out of the fender. Some people say this method is not safe, but I myself have change my Perodua Kancil’s PCD from 110 to 100 and I have been used it for 7 years until today and no problems encountered so far.
Note: If you change the PCD, do not forget to change the spare tire as well as your stock spare tire no longer can be used for your car.

D.I.Y. "sport car"

I found this picture on Google.com image search. This is the first Malaysian's car by Proton;  Proton Saga sedan, but not in this shape. This is the original..
This Saga owner was very creative and innovative. Maybe he tried to tell Proton that they should design car like what he was done with his Saga. One thing that make this car unique from other convertible sport car is that this "sport car" have 4 doors  which can fit 5 adult  including driver while most of the convertible sport car only can fit one passenger. But so sad, this "sport car' need to stop under the flyover or shopping complex parking basement when rain come out. But very sure this car will no be seen on-the-road. If he do so, this car surely be towed to police station or Road Transport Department and will be there until it become scrap metal.

It just my Dream Car..

Thousand of the supercar in this world with price range between hudred thousand and even million such as Ferrari, Porshe, Audi, BMW, Mercedes Benz, Lamborghini, Lotus and Nissan. But if there is a chances to choose either one of this supercar, I will definitely point out to Nissan Skyline GT-R R35. Previously, i really admire to GT-R R34, but since R35 is the latest and more modern and sporty design, I change my mind.


The GT-R was launch in the Japanese market on 06 December 2007 and 07 July 2008 in  the United States market. This is the specification of this GT-R (2007-2010 models)

My 1st car, I bought it while study in University
But I enjoy ride with this year 2000 850cc Kancil. Low fuel consumpation, low maintenance (can do-it-yourself), Easy parking, Fast but not furious (in K-car class), and easy to make-up.There is a plan to buy a new car, but for sure not GT-R, GT-R is just my dream car. There must be a Proton's car with lotus handling. But, nothing is impossible, maybe one day i will own my dream car with God will..
